How does a windsurfing sail work?

A windsurfing sail is not just a wind catcher, the convex side of the sail splits the wind. One part then goes along the convex side, the leeward side, of the windsurfing sail, the other part goes through the concave side, the windward side. There is a longer distance traveled by the airflow going along the leeward side, but still meets the other airflow at the same time. This is because the airflow going through the leeward side flows faster than the airflow on the windward side. This creates a lower air pressure on the leeward side of the windsurfing sail.

Are you a real speed demon? Then a camber windsurfing sail might be for you! These sails have a convex profile and can therefore plan faster. If you prefer to do crazy stunts, then a freestyle or wave windsurfing sail is a better choice. These are more solidly built to handle crashes. You also have more maneuverability with these sails and can easily do wave riding and freestyle tricks without the sail having too much pressure or feeling too clunky.

A windsurfing sail for the beginner is often easier to rig and has better handling on the water. These sails do not give much speed, but they do give security. To prevent as many tears in the monofilm as possible, a windsurfing sail for beginners is sturdier in the lower part of the sail.
